Cheapest Options for Moving Your Apartment Across the Country

A cross-country move can really hurt your pocket. In general, you’re looking at more than $2000 to move a typical apartment cross country if you hire professional movers. But there are some less expensive ways to get the job done. It all depends on how much work you want to do. Hiring professional movers is the easiest option, but here are a few ways to save a few bucks.

1. Rent a Moving Truck

Are you willing to drive cross country? If so, there are truck rental companies that will help you out. U-Haul is one example of a well-known truck rental company. You’ll pay for the truck, the distance you’re traveling, and the insurance. You’ll also have to figure in the cost of gas, and how often you’ll have to refuel.

The average gas capacity for a typical moving truck is about 30 gallons. If you know exactly how far you’re going, that will give you a better idea of your fuel costs.

2. Hire a Freight Company

The freight company will bring a trailer to your location. The trailer will be large, probably 28 feet. You’ll have a few days to load all of your belongings into the trailer. Three days is the typical amount of time most companies provide.

On the assigned day, the company will get the trailer and drive to your destination. Since you’re responsible for packing, the cost is less than hiring a full-service professional mover.

3. Rent a Moving Container

Portable moving containers are a popular option for moving cross-country. You’ve probably seen these containers during your daily travels. The containers look like large boxes with steel doors, similar to a garage door.

The company brings the container to you. You pack your belongings, and then the company transports the container to your destination. Your belongings are securely stored in the container, and you have the only key.

Your cost will depend on the size of the container. The length of time you’re renting will affect the price as well. Some people continue to rent the containers even after their move is complete. This is usually done when the container is being used to store household items.

4. Mail Your Belongings

Perhaps you’re not moving enough to warrant renting a truck or storage container. Shipping your belongings is an option. But this is recommended only if you have very few belongings.

You can ship items via the post office or some other commercial shipper such as UPS. It’s even possible to save more money by using free or inexpensive moving supplies. Nearby stores might have blank boxes, bubble-wrap, and paper that you can use for packing. You might want to avoid stores that sell raw goods, such as meat. You can also ask friends and family if they have any supplies to donate.
